"An Elf Named Moe" was the outcome of a songwriting game that writer Carl Stuck played with a group of songwriting friends in late 2013 just outside his hometown of Louisville, KY. The group met about once a month and picked a word or phrase to use in an original composition. In the succeeding month each writer would compose a song utilizing the agreed upon phrase and at the following meeting they would each play their songs for one another and pick a new phrase for the next meeting.

For the December gathering it had been decided to simply use the word "December" in the song for that session. For his song Stuck came up with the idea to create a new Christmas character and set the scene a day or two after Christmas when the workers at the North Pole, he presumed, must surely have their vacation. The very first line of the song uses the chosen game-word. "It happened at an airport last December".

Thus, Moe was born and the song as you hear it today has changed very little from that very first draft that the members of the songwriting group heard on a cold December day in a living room in Southern Indiana. Close your eyes as you listen and try to imagine how the North Pole is a little more fun with "An Elf Named Moe".
